First, we are going to listen
to the first verses of 4000 divya prabandham or Dravida vedam which highlights
the glory of Shri Vishnu as the parabrahman- the almighty, sung by Saint
Nammalvar of 9th century. The
text is called tiruvaymozhi.
உயர்வற
உயர் நலம் உடையவன் யவன்
அவன்
மயர்வற மதி நலம் அருளினன்
யவன் அவன்
அயர்வறும் அமரர்கள் அதிபதி யவன் அவன்
துயர் அறு சுடர் அடி
தொழுதெழு என் மனனே!
நாம்
அவன் இவன் உவன் அவள்
இவள் உவள் எவள்
தாம் அவர் இவர் உவர்
அது இது உது எது
வீம் அவை இவை உவை
அவை நலம் தீங்கவை
ஆமவை ஆயவை ஆய் நின்ற்
அவரே
Arise, O heart, worship the feet of the one, who is higher than the highest good, Ishvara - the Lord - of all beings from worms to celestials, who dispels all doubt and grants pure knowledge.
Ishvara is omnipresent and eternal, present everywhere in between things, as male, female or other beings and also he is their good, bad, indifferent, their past and their future.
Secondly, we are going to see two verses from Saint Vallalar of 19th century from the same land of Tamizh, echoing the same idea of love, pure knowledge and compassion as the primary standings of Ishvara.
அருட்பெரும் சோதி அருட்பெரும் சோதி தனி பெரும் கருணை அருட்பெரும் சோதி
Vallalar’s philosophy is called Shuddha sanmaargam – the path of pure goodness. The Tamil word Deivam means something unknown standing beyond everything to indicate Ishvara. Saint Vallalar speaks about the glory of that Luminous Ishvara who or which is magnanimous, sees only the heart and blesses one with higher existence even in this life. Most importantly he prays for strength to show love to others from grass to human just like Ishvara, Lord Shiva himself does.
அருட்சோதித்
தெய்வம்எனை ஆண்டுகொண்ட தெய்வம்
அம்பலத்தே ஆடுகின்ற ஆனந்தத் தெய்வம்
பொருட்சாரும் மறைகளெலாம் போற்றுகின்ற தெய்வம்
போதாந்தத் தெய்வம்உயர் நாதாந்தத் தெய்வம்
இருட்பாடு நீக்கிஒளி ஈந்தருளுந் தெய்வம்
எண்ணியநான் எண்ணியவா றெனக்கருளுந் தெய்வம்
தெருட்பாடல் உவந்தெனையும் சிவமாக்கும் தெய்வம்
சிற்சபையில் விளங்குகின்ற தெய்வமதே தெய்வம்.
அப்பாநான் வேண்டுதல்கேட்
டருள்புரிதல் வேண்டும்
ஆருயிர்கட் கெல்லாம்நான் அன்புசெயல் வேண்டும்
எப்பாரும் எப்பதமும் எங்கணும்நான் சென்றே
எந்தைநின தருட்புகழை இயம்பியிடல் வேண்டும்
செப்பாத மேனிலைமேல் சுத்தசிவ மார்க்கம்
திகழ்ந்தோங்க அருட்சோதி செலுத்தியிடல் வேண்டும்
தப்பேது நான்செயினும் நீபொறுத்தல் வேண்டும்
தலைவநினைப் பிரியாத நிலைமையும்வேண் டுவனே.

அவரவர்
தமதமது அறிவறி வகை வகை
அவரவர் இறையவர் என அடி அடைவர்கள்
அவரவர் இறையவர் குறைவிலர் இறையவர்
அவரவர் விதி வழி அடைய
நின்றனரே
Let each one worship whichever way as he deems fit, and each one shall progress
in their paths of worship. The paths are different followed by many, the one
Supreme Almighty, Impersonal, Ishvara stands above all and accepts the
offerings thus made and delivers
the results of their devotion.
Hinduism asks us all to respect each path followed by the multitude, accept the differences. This also implies while we celebrate our own path, let us not try to pull, tempt or force others in different paths in to our own or punish them for what and how they worship.
